Project Reflection:
What is the domestication project and what did you learn in this unit?
The Domestication Project was designed to educate students on how certain animals behavior can be observed and analyzed. What I learned in this project was how to ask a complex questions using dependent and independent variables involving animals and their level of domestication. I also learned how to find primary sources that supported my point of study.
What was you project?
I studied a sample size of 5 dogs and if they were still able to rely on their survival instincts and take care of themselves even after they've been domesticated for the majority of their lifetime.
I picked this point of study because it kind of ties into evolution. It's pretty commonly known that our pet dogs and cats came from their ancestors who killed prey and hunted in packs. I was genuinely curious about domesticated and evolved animals and if they still held the ability to be independent. How I collected information was by observing the dog's displayed attachment behavior to the owner. I then took my sample size of dogs and took them on a hike up in Horse Gulch and observed each dogs behavior when they were confronted by a small animal like a squirrel. I found out that certain dogs chased squirrels and some didn't. My sample size was a Border Collie Mix, Bernese Mountain dog, French Bull dog, Australian Shepherd, and Golden Retriever. The Border Collie, Bernese, and Australian Shepard all charged after squirrels and the French, and Golden did not. This solidified my research and results. Some dogs do have their survival instincts and some don't.
