Intro: The purpose of this project was to come up with a question about cars that could not be answered with a "yes" or "no". This was a pretty open ended project which I enjoyed. We could answer any question about automobiles that we could think of. We had to research certain elements that would help us in the process of finding an answer or conclusion.
The driving question that I focused on answering was, what is the total cost of a DUI? Through solving this question, I didn't use the strategy of just adding up a lot of big numbers. I started with outlining some background information of a DUI conviction and how many people receive them on an annual basis in Colorado. I also delved into explaining how an interlock mechanism becomes a factor of the total cost. I then did a layout of the average fees that needed to be paid for court functions. I had a section for personal costs and cause and affect situations. Personal costs were things that were more like obtaining something on your record or having to spend time in jail. Cause and affect was more for things like losing job due to inability to appear at workplace or having your insurance increase by 65%. While looking at a reliable source, I found a series of other expenses and costs with rough estimate numbers. All and all, a DUI conviction could cost anywhere from $7,000-$27,000. This is a very wide rage of cost because certain things come into affect that determine the grand total. These are things like what your blood alcohol level was, severity of property or bodily damage etc.
